Often not all automobiles are stopped, but instead every couple of automobiles or only those drivers of whom the officer has reasonable suspicion of drunk driving. The checkpoints exist to make the general public feel the possibility of being caught while driving under the influence is extremely high, and therefore stop them from doing so.
